Culture interviews test willingness to abandon AI work if it prioritizes safety.
Posts on X reference an Axios report that Anthropic poses a hypothetical in culture interviews. Candidates must describe their reaction if the company halted AI development to focus on safety and drove its valuation to zero. Minh Nhat Nguyen shared the question. Gary Marcus endorsed the practice of probing employee motivations. Miles Brundage noted the firm already screens effectively on mission fit. MB Miles Brundage@Miles_BrundageIt's clear to anyone who has met a lot of Ants that they do indeed screen somehow, and do a decent job. OAI should do such things more/has hired a lot of mission-ignorant ppl in recent years.

MB Miles Brundage@Miles_BrundageOTOH, as many outside are also constantly saying, a group of many smart, nice people can still do terrible things through groupthink, conformity pressure, ignorance, bad structures, etc. So, sure, do stuff like this, but binding policy is still + always has been the game
