Roon posted that people are mean to mathematicians when AI solves math problems and often treat the outcome as a zero-sum loss for human experts, possibly tied to childhood math trauma. Miles Brundage replied that people should not be mean but that he observes more mathematicians expressing concerns about AI implications than non-mathematicians criticizing mathematicians. Brundage added that non-mathematicians who comment usually frame the results as evidence that ASI is close in other areas too.
people are incredibly mean to mathematicians in this time. they really relish when an ai solves something and frame in a zero sum way w human mathematicians. i think it evens out some childhood era math trauma they have?

Miles Brundage@Miles_Brundage@tszzl I dunno, I've seen more mathematicians share concerns about what it means than non-mathematicians shitting on mathematicians... insofar as non-mathematicians are weighing in it seems to usually be "this shows ASI is close [in other areas too]"

AC Andrew Curran@AndrewCurran_@tszzl I don't want to me mean. Particularly because this is something everyone will have to face, regardless of sphere of expertize. But some of the arguments being made as to why it shouldn't be happening are infuriating.
